Sample election ballot for the Muscatine city elections of March 4, 1918, published by the Muscatine Herold. By publishing the ballot with an affidavit in German from the City Recorder, the Herold allowed its readers to familiarize themselves in advance with candidates as well as with the English text that they would have to navigate at the ballot box. There was strong local support for the Socialist Party among workers in the city's pearl button industry and other factories.
