It is a common American custom that, when a change in the editorship of a newspaper takes place, the incoming editors will state their plans and principles. We feel obliged to follow this custom and do so all the more willingly, as it offers us at the outset the opportunity to present our point of view to the worthy subscribers of this paper, so that later on no one will consider themselves deceived or regret that their expectations had not been fulfilled.

The task of publishing a German newspaper here in the capital city of our great state is not an easy one, especially when that newspaper should represent the diverse interests of its readers and, moreover, do so with the energy, diligence and talent that the German community has a right to expect. Although we were for years the managing editor of a newspaper, we nonetheless enter this new venture with not a little apprehension,––not because we have long been accustomed to write for an American public in English and thus might be caught making mistakes in the German language (this will no doubt be generously overlooked), but to take on a position suitable for German sense and character––the responsibility of assuming the role of a representative and defender of our countrymen in Iowa, this might indeed shake one’s confidence in oneself, and in this regard we don’t deny that we assume this duty somewhat timidly.

In the belief that all old party questions have been resolved and nothing more than the question of reform and personal liberty remains, we have established the following goals:

To discuss all political questions freely and independently. Although we were an eager Republican at the founding of the Republican party, we were nonetheless one of the first to participate in the Liberal Republican movement and find today that we, like the many thousand Germans whopursued the same path, did the right thing, and in the future we will follow the party that pays homage to progress and reform. Currently, the political parties can be regarded as in chaos, in none is there much cohesion; questions under debate are more abstract than they are actual, every party claims to be for reform and yet so far everything has remained the same. Nevertheless, there must be two parties, and since the Republican party, which is currently in power, has either not been able or not wanted to secure any betterment for us, we must thus join the ranks of the Anti-Monopolists, with whom we will contend until they abandon their current principles.

It is our duty to defend German customs and rights. In doing so, we do not wish to make a Germany of America, but we will endeavor to bring both countries closer together and to discuss various social concerns with propriety. To make this easier, we have decided to deliver two to three columns in English every week, in which we will elucidate from time to time the views of the German press and the German community in good English. This will not deprive our German readers of any space, as we will continue to deliver the same amount of German reading material as previously.

We will endeavor to make the “Anzeiger” first in the field of news. As a state newspaper, it shall convey the main events of every city and every county, and we will attempt this as our resources allow and the support that the honorable public lends to us. Excerpts of the proceedings of legislature and of state assemblies as well as all noteworthy events that occur in our capital will naturally be reported.

Although we cannot deliver as much select reading material as other older newspapers in the big cities, we will nevertheless strive to give an overview of America and our old Fatherland. Likewise we will strive to bring precise market reports every week, indeed, anything that might be of use or entertaining for German farmers and business owners.

We bring experience, diligence and tenacity to our enterprise, and should the honorable public recognize our efforts through their active support, then we will always show ourselves diligent and thankful.

Respectfully,
The Editor

Achtungsvoll
Die Redaktion

[transcribed by Andrew Jansen]

Fast in jedem Haus gibt’s jetzt solchen.

Communion [Kommunion].
- Also nächsten Dienstag ist Circustag [Zirkustag].

Carroll and the surrounding region
____________________________
- Watch out for pickpockets next Tuesday.
- On Sunday, the children of the local Catholic congregation went to their first communion.
- The Prohibition Act comes into effect today. However, no one will suffer from thirst.
- August Böhme is regarded a master of calligraphy and indeed, he really is.
- The butter churner of Mt. Carmel, Mr. Miller, left for his home in Illinois on Tuesday.
- Mr. P. M. Guthrie, delegate for the Democratic National Convention, is travelling to Chicago on Sunday.
- Mrs. Jacobsberger of Waterloo stayed for several weeks in the family of Mr. Petersberger as a visitor.
- And in "the heat" we should not drink a cooling, revitalizing, refreshing beer. This is insane!
- Our Carroll Music Corps went to Danbury on Tuesday morning to play at the local farming exhibition.
- The mother of John Loebl arrived here last week from Milwaukee to stay with her son for good.
- Many Carroll County Democrats are going to Chicago to the Democratic National Convention.
- The net revenue of the Catholic picnic on Tuesday last week is $302. The money will be used to improve the school.
- Mr. Loch of Breda was in the city last Saturday to sell tickets for a shotgun that will be raffled on July 8th.
- At Henry Dopheide Jr.’s, in Roselle Tp., the inauguration of the new house took place, which was very sociable.
- On Sunday, the year-old son of H. Billerbeck was buried in Mt. Carmel. It died of cholera. Our condolences!
- The vote, held on Tuesday, on whether Carroll should construct waterworks in value of $10,000 was passed by a majority of 45 votes
- In Mt. Carmel, the only son of Mr. F. W. Krause died on Sunday of cholera. The funeral took place on Monday. We offer our sympathies!
- The ice cream and strawberry party of the ladies of the Episcopal congregation last Friday in Stanton's Garden was well attended and had a net revenue of $15.
- Against filthy, debased, and creeping braggards of the Prohiblicans only one means helps: 'To flog' so that they get enough of their own medicine.
- On Saturday morning, the family of Frank Pape, residing four miles north of town, was delighted by the arrival of a healthy boy. Mother and child are well. Best of luck!
- On Tuesday last week, in Hillsdale, Ludwig Hitzlsperger and Elsiabeth Weiners were married. Both from Pleasant Valley Township. We wish the young couple happiness and blessing on their way through life.
- Gerh. Brüggemann of Mt. Carmel visited us this week and complained that he would be soon be unable to breathe. This will be better after the Fourth. Because, as it seems to us, he is suffering from adiposity.
- The first poser will be subpoenaed or has to dangle. A free nation does not need spies or posers. The Republicans have made the Prohibition Act, and it is their business to have it enacted if they can.
- Thursday evening last week, two long trains with emigrants came through Carroll on their way westward. They were mostly Norwegians, Swedes and Danes. But there were also Englishmen among them.
- Before the next edition of the 'Democrat' appears the Democratic Convention in Chicago will have decided who will be the Democratic standard bearer in this presidential election. Hopefully, Governor Cleveland from New York will be nominated as presidential candidate.
- Mr. Peter Berger was not mentioned last week by accident as one of those people who had done so much at the Catholic Picnic. We also forgot Miss Mary Knieplen, sister-in-law of Mr. Chas. Ludwig from the popular company 'Gebrüder Ludwig', for which we apologize.
- The company 'Kohn & Adler' in Rock Island, III., asked us to inform our readers that the people who send their names and addresses to us will get a complete copy of the Iowa Prohibition Law and other interesting notes. Kohn & Adler is a wholesaler in spirits.
- We spoke some days ago with several Republicans about the prohibitionists and the Know-Nothing Blaine. One of these Republicans then held that several high-ranking Democrats in Carroll said that they would vote for Blaine. When we asked them who these high-ranking Democrats were, they were, of course, unable to answer because it was just a statement to catch the gullible.
- John W. Guthrie, son of P. M. Guthrie, returned from Notre Dame in Indiana to recover from his strenuous studies during the two-month vacation. He was especially zealous to learn the German language thoroughly. As usual, he received several prizes this year for the best studies.
- A fire destroyed the department store and the inventory of Swender brothers in Maple River Junction on Sunday night. The fire was discovered at about 1am. The owners were in Carroll at the time of the fire and had no idea that their property had fallen prey to the fire demon.
- We want to give good advice to women and girls. If they have to reveal secrets to each other, especially if these are still a little delicate in nature, they should not stand under the staircase that is leading to the 'Democrat’s' office. Although the conversation which took place last week was not intended for our ears, the secret that has been negotiated is nevertheless well preserved. We won't tell anything.
- So, next Tuesday is circus day. But since every circus always has a number of all kinds of swindlers, we alert our readers who will be coming to town on this day to see the 'elephant' to protect their purses from the pickpockets, since they are everywhere where you can find a big crowd of people pushing and pressing. Everyone should have the necessary "change" when he buys his ticket, so he does not show much money.
- The Carroll Blaine and Logan Club has already gently departed. The enthusiasm, which was sought artificially among the local population, could not be found despite all the convulsive attempts, and since the gentlemen who created this club did not want to invest their own money to get money for the club, the whole enterprise failed. And like here in Carroll, so it is in many other places. Where first the nomination of Blaine and Logan was greeted with joy, suddenly a conspicuous cool came along. All the Republicans, who really mean honestly, are suddenly struck by the fact that this ticket is not the right one, and the best proof for this is the fact that 45 daily Republican newspapers have already declared against the Republican presidential candidates. The local, gently departed Blaine and Logan Club we wish eternal rest.

Correspondenz. [Korrespondenz] [Fortsetzung.]

[Continued]
Before I go into more detail, I want to make a short comment for Jos. Mihlenbauer, which is to show how well one is informed here. Even though there is nothing about this in his reports, it is from him. He claims that there was an excursion here recently, but they left totally demoralized. That is not true. The people came, looked and went to Midland, 20 miles from here where just one single section house is standing. There, a city is to be founded. ‘You pay $350 for lots there. The people were poor, but not so discouraged – or all fools. Well, how is that, Jos. M.? I am curious about your answer. Marienfeld’s future is rock-solid. The city is growing consistently and a building site costs $50 already. The city would be considerably larger, but only German Catholics can live there. People, who came with the before mentioned excursion, offered P. Prior $500 for a single building site, but he did not. We do not want any strangers here, the colony is united, and each one helps the other und this harmonious bond would be disrupted if people of another faith were to live here. Marienfeld already has a pharmacy, a post office, a telegraph, a clothes, a shoe, a hardware and a grocery store, a saloon and a restaurant are under construction and other shops will soon follow. In a short time, a steam grinding mill will be constructed. The church and the school are too small already and are being rebuilt. The latter is to be directed by nuns. In the fall, Marienfeld will probably become county seat, a seminary for priests will be opened and a hospital for lung diseases will be opened as well by a doctor from the east. Everything will come true before this winter. The city makes a pleasant impression with its nice ‚houses‘. All streets are already laid out and fill up quite quickly with inhabitants. Two years ago when the earth where Marienfeld is standing now was still drumming with the hoofs of wild horses or wild buffaloes; a German colony is there today, full of happy and hopeful Germans. For a long time, monasteries have accomplished great things in culture and science, and we as well who live in Marienfeld owe our new home and God’s blessing for our enterprise and its successes to a monastery (the Carmelites). The flourishing of the town is a clear proof that the farmers grow things here, for where the farmers are starving, as our Jos. Mihlenbauer pretends, there can be no city because it lives mainly from the farmers living.
I have already spoken about the development before, and now I want to commemorate the soil and the really existing problems here in Marienfeld.
[Conclusion will follow.]
The prohiblican organs are always screaming about crimes in the south, but now you hear what the community members of Upton, Iowa did last week and what the “Hawk Eye”, appearing in Burlington, Ia., is reporting:
‘In Upton, which is adjoining to the county Van Buren in Missouri, a German had been running a saloon for a long time. In view of July 4th, with its Prohibition Act, he thought it advisable to move to Upton in Scotland County, Missouri. He built a new saloon and promised everyone who wanted to hear it that he would not surrender and would serve his old customers from his new saloon. This seemed to make the prohibitionists of Van Buren County angry. They gathered together, accompanied by many hags they moved across the state border and demolished the hated saloon. As soon as all implements had been torn out and the owner had escaped, the half-empty building was set on fire.’
That is very nice! Must not every citizen of Iowa blush because of a crime like this? Hell no, every prohibitionists have long since lost their sense of shame. We should remind ourselves that every landlord has the right to keep his saloon open. It must be a nice area, this Van Buren County. You can see the way the prohibitionists are doing it, wherever they have the majority. Furthermore, you can see that they are a horde of barbarians like the murderous Apaches, Indians and Avars; so they cannot make any claim to civilization.
The Republican newspapers always point to the Democratic Party whenever whiskey is the topic and set it up as the whiskey party. Strange! Statistical reports show that especially in the Republican states most whiskey is being consumed.
Governor Manning is suggested as a candidate for the national House of Representatives in the 9th Congressional District of Iowa. Why did he not stay in the 11th district? Or was he a bit afraid of Carroll Co. and its (Manning’s) “Record”?. In Carroll Co., where he has been living for years and is well known, he cannot even collate the votes of his own party.

Translation
The Republican presidential candidate James Gillespie Blaine was born on January 31, 1830, in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He received his education in a college there and became a teacher for mathematics in Kentucky, where he met a young woman from Maine, whom he married and who persuaded him to move to Maine, where he soon became a newspaper editor. In the Kennebec Journal and the Portland Daily Adviser he supported PROHIBITION and when he got elected into the House of Representatives of his state, he was one of the most active supporters for the temperance and prohibition movements. He got elected into the national House of Representatives in 1862 where he was Speaker for three consecutive terms and used this position to enrich himself at the expense of the people. He was nominated senator by the governor of the state of Maine. When Garfield became president, he quit his position as senator to serve as minister of state in Garfield’s cabinet, but he was fired under President Arthur. Blaine applied for the position of presidential candidate three times. For the first time in 1876, then in 1880 and this year. Now he is a candidate for the presidency but he will not be president of the United States because his connections to all monopolies are too obvious. In addition, he became notorious because of his corrupt actions in the national House of Representatives.

The citizens took the shooter [Schießbold?] out of prison and hung him. – The weatherman Venner died last week at the age of 44. Whoever believes that we are without any weather now is wrong because the weatherman Wiggins now has the monopoly to make the weather. – Logan visited his comrade Blaine in Augusta.
______________
Blaine called the Germans in one of his speeches “Hessians”, which in the American interpretation means something like “hireling” or to be buyable with money. The word “Hessians” is used as a swearword by Americans against the Germans and when they want to designate a venal or corrupt person. That the American uses the word “Hessian” in this way dates back to the Revolutionary War. The story is the following. The former landgrave of Hesse, a stingy and mercenary character, made a contract with the British government stipulating that he would deliver auxiliaries to fight the Americans and that he would get $20 for every delivered man. He pressed as many men as he could, sent them to England and from there to America, where they were forced to fight against the young republic. Americans hated those Hessian auxiliaries because they were afraid of them as the Hessians were brave soldiers. They were slandered by saying that they pillaged the Americans and that they had been masters at marauding. This is, as said before, a slander. Many Hessians went over to the Americans and fought in their ranks to achieve their freedom for them. Only low-minded and low-acting people like Blaine would blame the poor Hessians for fighting against the Americans because they were forced to do so, and it is even more horrible when the word is used in this sense against a whole nation. Germans, are you hirelings? Are you to be had for money?

The state New York is sending a solid Cleveland delegation to the democratic national convention. The three party groups, namely Tammann Hall, County Democracy, and Irving Hall blend into this excellent man and will most likely be the democratic presidential candidate.

[transcribed by Noah Hochstetler]

[transcribed by Noah Hochstetler]
