We feel obliged to follow this custom and do so all the more willingly, as it offers us at the outset the opportunity to present our point of view to the worthy subscribers of this paper, so that later on no one will consider themselves deceived or regret that their expectations had not been fulfilled. The task of publishing a German newspaper here in the capital city of our great state is not an easy one, especially when that newspaper should represent the diverse interests of its readers and, moreover, do so with the energy, diligence and talent that the German community has a right to expect. Although we were for years the managing editor of a newspaper, we nonetheless enter this new venture with not a little apprehension,––not because we have long been accustomed to write for an American public in English and thus might be caught making mistakes in the German language (this will no doubt be generously overlooked), but to take on a position suitable for German sense and character––the responsibility of assuming the role of a representative and defender of our countrymen in Iowa, this might indeed shake one’s confidence in oneself, and in this regard we don’t deny that we assume this duty somewhat timidly. In the belief that all old party questions have been resolved and nothing more than the question of reform and personal liberty remains, we have established the following goals: <ol> <li>To discuss all political questions freely and independently. Although we were an eager Republican at the founding of the Republican party, we were nonetheless one of the first to participate in the Liberal Republican movement and find today that we, like the many thousand Germans whopursued the same path, did the right thing, and in the future we will follow the party that pays homage to progress and reform. Currently, the political parties can be regarded as in chaos, in none is there much cohesion; questions under debate are more abstract than they are actual, every party claims to be for reform and yet so far everything has remained the same. Nevertheless, there must be two parties, and since the Republican party, which is currently in power, has either not been able or not wanted to secure any betterment for us, we must thus join the ranks of the Anti-Monopolists, with whom we will contend until they abandon their current principles.</li> <li>It is our duty to defend German customs and rights. In doing so, we do not wish to make a Germany of America, but we will endeavor to bring both countries closer together and to discuss various social concerns with propriety. To make this easier, we have decided to deliver two to three columns in English every week, in which we will elucidate from time to time the views of the German press and the German community in good English. This will not deprive our German readers of any space, as we will continue to deliver the same amount of German reading material as previously.</li> <li>We will endeavor to make the “Anzeiger” first in the field of news. As a state newspaper, it shall convey the main events of every city and every county, and we will attempt this as our resources allow and the support that the honorable public lends to us. Excerpts of the proceedings of legislature and of state assemblies as well as all noteworthy events that occur in our capital will naturally be reported.</li> <li>Although we cannot deliver as much select reading material as other older newspapers in the big cities, we will nevertheless strive to give an overview of America and our old Fatherland. Einem hier in Amerika allgemeinen Gebrauche gemäß, wenn eine Veränderung in der Redaktion einer Zeitung stattfindet, daß die Einkommenden ihre Pläne und Grundsätze erklären, fühlen wir uns verpflichtet, denselben nachzukommen und das um so erfreulicher, da es uns vom Anfange eine Gelegenheit bietet, unseren Standpunkt den werthen Abonnenten dieses Blattes in solcher Weise darzulegen, damit später Niemand sich getäuscht fühlen kann oder bedauern muß, daß seine Erwartungen nicht erfüllt wurden. Die Aufgabe, eine deutsche Zeitung in der Hauptstadt unseres großen Staates herauszugeben, ist keine leichte, hauptsächlich eine solche Zeitung, welche die vielen verschiedenen Interessen des Volkes vertreten soll, und dieses mit jener Energie, Fleiß und Talent, die zu verlangen, das deutsche Volk ein Recht hat.
