Er sucht nicht durch Zwangsgesetze besser zu machen, sondern durch Ueberzeugung und beredte Worte und Herr Murphy ist der größte Temperenzredner in Amerika. Er geht überall hin, in alle Schichten der Gesellschaft, unter die Armen und Verkommenen, wie unter die Reichen und Pharisäer und hat auf diese Weise sicherlich viel Gutes gestiftet. Am Mittwoch verflossener Woche hatte der Staatsverein der Saloonwirthe [Saloonwirte] und Liquörhändler seine Zusammenkunft hier und Murphy hörte davon. Straks richtete er ein Gesuch an den Verein, um die Erlaubnis, eine Rede vor ihnen zu halten, und nahmen die Herren Wirthe dieselbe sogleich einstimmig an. Am Nachmittag der Versammlung erschien der Temperenz-Reformator auch in der von einer stattlichen Anzahl der Händler in geistlichen Flüssigkeiten anwesenden Versammlung und wurde der Redner achtungsvoll empfangen und seinen Worten die vollste Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Herr Murphy sagte ins Deutsche überse[tzt] Folgendes: “Meine Herren! Ich erachte es als eine große Ehre, daß sie mir erlaubten, vor dieser Convention zu sprechen. Ich glaubte, daß bisher ein großes Mißverständnis zwischen den Liquörleuten und den Temperenz-Leuten geherrscht hat. Das war ein großer Irrthum [Irrtum] und lag dieser auf Seiten der Temperenz-Partei. Sie hat unartigen Schimpf auf die Saloonwirthe geworfen und dadurch einen großen Golf zwischen derselben und den Wirthen geschaffen, den keiner von den beiden Theilen [Teilen] zu überschreiten vermochte. Der Liquörhändler war nicht geneigt dazu und der Temperenz-Mann wollte nicht. “Das Verkaufen von Liquören hat von jeher bestanden und wird, wie ich glaube, noch lange Zeit fortgeführt werden. Es war von jeher ein Verlangen nach Liquören in allen Schichten der Bevölkerung von der Zeit an, seit Noah sich ein Räuschchen antrank und so wird es wohl auch immer bleiben. “Dennoch hat dasselbe viel Leiden verursacht, nicht der Genuß, sondern der unmäßige Genuß des berauschenden Getränkes; es war aber nicht Eure Schuld. Sie als Liquörhändler können sehr viel thun [tun], diesen Uebelstand zu beseitigen, und ich glaube, daß Sie bereit und willens sind das zu thun [tun]. Es nimmt einen starken Willen “Nein” zu sagen, wenn Sie aber einen Mann sehen, der vollauf bis zum Hals geladen ist, sagen Sie “Nein” zu ihm; sagt ihm, er habe genug und schickt ihn nach Hause, wenn Ihr auch einen Polizisten rufen müsset, um ihn nach Hause zu bringen. Steht bei Euren Richtern und befolgt die Gesetze, ungeachtet wie unterdrückend dieselben sein mögen. Wenn ihr eine Apotheke oder ein “Blindes Schwein” findet, in welchen Liquör verkauft wird, seht dazu, daß die Beamten dieselben zum Aufhören zwingen. Ihr könnet durch Eure Organisation Euer Geschäft sowohl wie Eure Stellung in der Gemeinschaft erhöhen. “Die Temperenzleute haben viele harte Worte über Liquörleute gesagt, einfach deswegen, weil dieselben Euch nicht kennen; dieselben haben nie in ihrem Leben Liquör gekostet und sprechen von Sachen, von denen sie nichts wissen. Wenn ich etwas bin, werdet ihr mich als Euren Freund erkennen, wenn ihr in Verlegenheit seid. Ich kenne Euren Kummer und Eure Sorgen und ich habe oft meinen klerikalen Freunden gesagt, daß wenn Sie so viel Geduld hätten, wie die Saloonwirthe [Saloonwirte], dann könnten sie die Welt bekehren. Ich habe gute Leute im Liquörgeschäft gefunden, ich würde aber Euch Allen rathen [raten], [das] Gelübde (ein Pledge nichts mehr zu trinken und nichts mehr zu verkaufen) zu unterschreiben. Ich meine, daß kein Saloonwirth hinter dem Schanktisch trinken sollte, da er stets aufzupassen hat, daß Alles richtig vorgeht und ihm keine Belästigung oder Geldverlust verursacht wird. Und dann habt Ihr Frauen und Kinder, die Euch tief am Herzen liegen und denen Ihr keinen Gram oder die Thräne des Kummers in die Augen bringen wollt. Ich danke Euch herzlich und wünsche Euch den Segen Gottes.” Ein Dankbeschluß wurde Herrn Murphy nach Beendigung seiner Rede gefaßt, worauf der Herr die Convention verließ. Daß seine Rede unter den extremen Temperenzlern Anstoß erregte, war zu erwarten. Gleich den nächsten Tag kam der Erz-Temperenzler Thomas G. Orwig in einem Eingesandt im “State Register” heraus und griff Hrn. Murphy heftig an und frug ihn, ob er wirklich das gesagt habe, was in der obigen Rede enthalten ist. Herr Murphy erwiderte darauf, daß es wahr sei und er kein Wort davon zurückzunehmen habe. Daß seine Wirksamkeit hier aber dadurch gestört wurde, zeigt die Thatsache [Tatsache], daß er schon letzten Sonntag seine agitatorischen Reden hier einstellte und Des Moines verließ. Vernünftige Agitation gegen den Genuß von Spirituosen und speziell gegen den Saloon ist unseren Fanatikern ein Greuel.
