<text>The Republican presidential candidate James Gillespie Blaine was born on January 31, 1830, in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He received his education in a college there and became a teacher for mathematics in Kentucky, where he met a young woman from Maine, whom he married and who persuaded him to move to Maine, where he soon became a newspaper editor. In the Kennebec Journal and the Portland Daily Adviser he supported PROHIBITION and when he got elected into the House of Representatives of his state, he was one of the most active supporters for the temperance and prohibition movements. He got elected into the national House of Representatives in 1862 where he was Speaker for three consecutive terms and used this position to enrich himself at the expense of the people. He was nominated senator by the governor of the state of Maine. When Garfield became president, he quit his position as senator to serve as minister of state in Garfield’s cabinet, but he was fired under President Arthur. Blaine applied for the position of presidential candidate three times. For the first time in 1876, then in 1880 and this year. Now he is a candidate for the presidency but he will not be president of the United States because his connections to all monopolies are too obvious. In addition, he became notorious because of his corrupt actions in the national House of Representatives.

Blaine called the Germans in one of his speeches “Hessians”, which in the American interpretation means something like “hireling” or to be buyable with money. The word “Hessians” is used as a swearword by Americans against the Germans and when they want to designate a venal or corrupt person. That the American uses the word “Hessian” in this way dates back to the Revolutionary War. The story is the following. The former landgrave of Hesse, a stingy and mercenary character, made a contract with the British government stipulating that he would deliver auxiliaries to fight the Americans and that he would get $20 for every delivered man. He pressed as many men as he could, sent them to England and from there to America, where they were forced to fight against the young republic. Americans hated those Hessian auxiliaries because they were afraid of them as the Hessians were brave soldiers. They were slandered by saying that they pillaged the Americans and that they had been masters at marauding. This is, as said before, a slander. Many Hessians went over to the Americans and fought in their ranks to achieve their freedom for them. Only low-minded and low-acting people like Blaine would blame the poor Hessians for fighting against the Americans because they were forced to do so, and it is even more horrible when the word is used in this sense against a whole nation. Germans, are you hirelings? Are you to be had for money?

The state New York is sending a solid Cleveland delegation to the democratic national convention. The three party groups, namely Tammann Hall, County Democracy, and Irving Hall blend into this excellent man and will most likely be the democratic presidential candidate. </text>
