Title A name given to the resource GERMAN-IOWAN NEWSPAPERS Document Translation Translation With heavy hearts we must fulfill our obligation to the readers of the Staats-Anzeiger and to the overall German community of the state and report the sad news that Joseph Eiboeck, that unflinching fighter for liberty and justice, was snatched away by the grim reaper on Wednesday, the 5th of January, at 11:15 a.m. Although he occasionally experienced moments of frailty at his advanced age, he nevertheless always recovered quickly, and was from dawn to dusk one of the most capable and active men we have known. On December 28 he complained of a light cold that kept him housebound, but initially showed no serious symptoms. A few days later he developed pneumonia and then, the day before his passing, suffered a stroke which fully paralyzed him and left him in a coma. It was deeply saddening to see a man like Joseph Eiboeck depart; we will never see a man so full of energy and courage in Iowa again, and his death will be mourned across the state and far beyond its borders, above all among the friends of the German-American Liberal State Association of Iowa, which he had served as president since its founding. A short biography of the deceased follows. We will provide a more detailed one as soon as circumstances allow. Mr. Eiboeck was born on February 23, 1838, in Breitenbrunn (Szeluskut), Hungary, and emigrated with his family at the beginning of 1849 to America, arriving on May 1st in Dubuque, Iowa, where he became a typesetter and the first apprentice at the first German newspaper in Iowa. For a couple of years he was a school teacher––he gave writing lessons when he was 18 years old and became a public school teacher at 19. In August 1859, in Garnavillo, Clayton County, he bought the English-language “Clayton County Journal,” which he relocated one year later to Elkader following the transfer of the county seat there. He published and edited the “Journal” until August 20, 1872. From ’61 to ’62 he was a member of the [illegible] of the Ninth Iowa Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. In 1868, he founded alongside his English paper [i.e., the “Clayton County Journal”] the “Nord Iowa Herold,” which he sold six months afterwards. In addition to the above named papers and the “Iowa Staats-Anzeiger,” which he edited and published for more than 39 years, he also published two English-language newspapers in Des Moines, first the “Herald of Liberty” and afterwards the “State Independent.” He edited both these papers as anti-Prohibition publications, against the interference of [temperance] fanatics in the basic rights of American citizens. In 1873 he was in Europe, spending three months in Vienna as American Commissioner for the Vienna World’s Fair. In 1872 Mr. Eiboeck wrote a “History of Clayton County and Northern Iowa” (Geschichte von Clayton County und dem nördlichen Iowa) and in 1900 he wrote the history of “The Germans of Iowa and their Achievements” (Die Deutschen von Iowa und deren Errungenschaften). In 1879 he was nominated by the Democratic State Convention for the office of State Auditor, running against Buren R. Sherman, the later Governor. He was [initially] ahead of the other candidate on the ticket by so many votes that for a while it was uncertain which of the two was elected. In 1893 Mr. Eiboeck was one of two national commissioners for the Columbian World’s Fair in Chicago. Thanks to his influence and industriousness, the Fair also stayed open on Sundays. His speech before the National Commission was cabled to both Paris and London. On June 15th, 1862, Mr. Eiboeck married Miss Fannie Harrison. The couple had six children, including a son who died when he was five years-old. Only one child survives him, Mrs. Minnie McFarland, spouse of the late S.C. McFarland, American consul in Nottingham, England. For more than half a century Mr. Eiboeck held yearly campaign speeches for the democratic party, to which he belonged since 1872. He was an honorary member of the Des Moines Turners and the German Jonathan Lodge No. 137 I.O.O.F. (Independent Order of Odd Fellows), was also a Freemason and a Knight Templar, as well as an honorary member of the German Men’s Choir. The deceased belonged likewise to the German-American Press Association of the West, which he served for many years as president and then, in the last few years, as honorary president. The funeral will take place on Friday, January 10th at 2:00 PM, beginning at the Freemason Lodge, which has been entrusted with planning the entire ceremony, and among whose members the deceased ranked as one of the oldest. The Turners Club, the German Odd Fellow Lodge and the German Men’s Choir will send honor escorts. The grieving spouse, daughter (Mrs. C. S. McFarland) and grandchild (Frau Howard), the last two of Marshalltown, mourn a truly beloved husband, loving father and grandfather. In the passing of Joseph Eiboeck, the entire German community has lost one of its dearest friends. The burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery. Transcription Any written text transcribed from a sound <h4 style="text-align:center;">† Joseph Eiboeck † Redakteur und Herausgeber des “Iowa Staats Anzeiger” gestorben</h4> Mit schwerem Herzen müssen wir uns einer Pflicht unterwerfen den Lesern des „ Staats Anzeiger“ sowie dem gesammten Deutschthum des Staats die Trauerkunde mitzuteilen, daß Joseph Eiboeck, der unerschrockene Kämpfer für Freiheit und Recht von dem unerbittlichen Schnitter Tod am Mittwoch Morgen den 8. Januar, 11 Uhr 15 Minuten, dahingerafft wurde. Obwohl sich bei dem im hohen Alter stehenden Greis in den letzten Jahren ab und zu Schwächezustände einstellten, so erholte er sich doch immer wieder bald davon und war von Früh bis Spät einer der tätigsten Männer, die wir kennen gelernt haben. Am 28. Dezember klagte er über eine leichte Erkältung, die ihm an das Haus fesselte und zu Anfang keine schlimmen Symptome zeigte. Einige Tage darauf stellte sich jedoch Lungenentzündung ein und folgte noch dazu ein Schlaganfall den Tag vor seinem Dahinscheiden, wodurch er völlig gelähmt wurde und auch nicht mehr zu Bewußtsein kam. Es war tieftraurig einen Mann wie Joseph Eiboeck scheiden zu sehen, einen Mann so voller Tatkraft und Unerschrockenheit wird es in Iowa schwer wieder geben und wird sein Tod im ganzen Staat, ja weit über dessen Grenzen hin aus betrauert werden, namentlich unter den Freunden des Deutsch-Amerikanischen Liberalen Staat-Verband von Iowa, dessen Präsident er seit dessen Bestehen war. Nachfolgend lassen wir einen kurzen Lebenslauf des Verstorbenen folgen, den wir ausführlicher bringen werden sobald die Umstände es erlauben. Herr Eiböck wurde am 23. Februar 1838 zu Breitenbrunn (Szeluskut) in Ungarn, geboren und kam mit seinen Eltern Anfangs 1849 nach Amerika und am 1. Mai nach Dubuque, Iowa, wo er Schriftsetzer wurde und der erste Lehrling an der ersten deutschen Zeitung in Iowa war. Ein paar Jahre lang war er Schullehrer—er erteilte Schreibunterricht als er 18 Jahre alt war und wurde in seinem 19. Jahre Lehrer an einer öffentlichen Schule. Im August 1859 kaufte er in Garnavillo, Clayton Country das englische „Clayton Country Journal“ das er ein Jahr später infolge der Verlegung des Gerichtssitzes nach Elkader verlegte, wo er dann das Blatt bis zu 20. August 1872 redigirte und heraus gab. Von 61‘ bis 62 war er im Unionskrieg Mitglied des Neunten Iowa Infanterieregiments. Er gründete in 1868 neben seinem englischen Blatt den“Nord Iowa Herold,“ den er sechs Monate danach verkaufte. In 1872 verfaßte Herr Eiböck eine „Geschichte von Clayton County und dem nördlichen Iowa“ und in 1900 verfaßte er die Geschichte „Die Deutschen von Iowa und deren Errungenschaften“ In 1879 wurde er von der demokratischen Staats-Convention gegen Buren N. Sherman, den nachmaligen Gouverneur, als Kandidat für das Amt des Staats-Auditeurs aufgestellt und lief den anderen Kandidaten auf seinem Ticket so weit voraus, daß es eine Zeitlang ungewiß schien, welcher von den beiden erwählt war. In 1893 war Herr Eiböck einer der zwei National-Commissäre für die Columbische Weltausstellung in Chicago; seinem Wirken und seinem Eifer ist es zuzuschreiben, daß diese Ausstellung auch sonntags offen gehalten wurde. Seine Rede vor der National-Commission wurde nach Paris und London gekabelt. Herr Eiböck verheiratete sich am 15. Juni 1862 mit Fräulein Fannie Garrison, die ihm sechs Kinder schenkte, darunter einen Sohn, der starb, als er fünf Jahre alt war. Nur ein Kind lebt noch, Frau Minnie McFarland, Gattin des verstorbenen Herrn S. C. McFarland, amerikanischer Consul in Nottingham, England. Mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert hielt Herr Eiböck jährlich Campagne-Reden für die demokratische Partei, der er seit 1872 angehört. Er war Ehrenmitglied des Des Moines Turnverein und der deutschen Jonathan Loge No. 137 U.O.S.B. Wer mit den Familienverhältnissen des Verstorbenen bekannt gewesen ist, weiß[,] da[ß] Herr Eiboeck seine Frau seit Jahren selbst pflegte und alles anwandte, um das Leben so angenehm wie möglich zu gestalten, und [es kann] als eine gütige Fügung des Schicksals angesehen werden[,] daß sich der Herrscher der Heerschaaren auch kurz nach dem Hinscheiden des Herrn Eiboeck erbarmte und sie zu sich nahm. Herr Eiboeck, dessen Geschichte, dessen Leben und Wirken, ist ja allgemein über den Staat bekannt, da[ß] es wohl nicht nötig ist, heute näher darauf einzugehen, zumal uns nur kurze Zeit geboten ist, diese Ausgabe des „Staats Anzeiger“ herauszubringen, und werden die Nachfolger wohl das Nötige tun. Die Beerdigung des Herrn Eiboeck fand am 10. Januar, nachmittags um 2 Uhr von dem Freimauerertempel aus statt, da der Verstorbene seit seiner frühesten Jugend diesem Orden angehörte, war es der Wunsch der Hinterbliebenen, da[ß] der Orden ihm die letzte Ehre erweise. Die Zeremonie in der Halle war recht eindrucksvoll. Pastor Leamer von der Ev. Luth. St. John’s Kirche leitete die allgemeine Trauerfeier und nebst dem Ritus des Ordens trug der Germania Männerchor das herrliche Lied „Wie sie so sanft dort ruhen“, recht gefühlvoll vor. Der Deutsch-Amerikanische Liberale Staatsverband von Iowa, der Preßverband des Westens und der Scott Country Central Verband hatten nebst allen hiesigen deutschen Vereinen, Logen und Freunden recht hübsche Blumenstücke gesandt und folgte nebst den Leidtragenden eine große Anzahl Freunde dem Sarge des getreuen Kämpen nach dem Woodland Friedhof. Nachfolgende Herren, treue Freunde des Verstorbenen, fungierten als Bahrenträger: Gottfried Ball, Frank Youngermann, Hans Jung, George Wambach, H.C. Hensen und Robert Knauer. Die Ehrenbahrträger waren die Herren Lafayette [Y]oung Sr., Harvey Ingham, Moses Strauß, William G. Hale, Louis Dippel und Paul Kraetsch. Frau Eiboeck, deren Ableben am Samstag, den 11. Januar, vormittags 10 Uhr 30 Minuten erfolgte, wurde am Sonntag Nachmittag, den 12. Januar neben ihrem tapferen Lebensgefährten beerdigt. Pastor Leamer von der Ev. Luth. Nun ruhen die zwei Getreuen, alles Erdenleid, aller Kummer ist von ihnen genommen, und wünschen wir, wie alle Freunde, ihnen selige Ruhe. Männer wie Karl Schurtz, Steuben, Kent und alle andere Männer, die in der Nationalgeschichte des Landes einen wichtigen Anteil genommen, haben nichts Größeres geleistet als unser Freiheitsheld Joseph Eiboeck für den Staat Iowa und dessen Deutschthum geliefert hat. Der Verstorbene hat sich nicht nur allein eine „Geschichte der Deutschen von Iowa“ geliefert, nein, er ist wie in dem Heldenlied „Der Mann gewesen, als alles versank, der mutig zum Himmel den Degen schwang, da schwur er‘s beim Gott, gar zornig und hart, den Muckern zu zeigen, die echte Deutsch Art.“ Wäre es nun diesen Mann vergönnt gewesen, noch ein paar Jahre zu leben, welches Schreiber dieses ohne Zweifel annimmt, wenn ihm die gerechte Behandlung zu teil geworden wäre, dann hätte der Staat Iowa sicherlich das gefunden[,[ was ihm dienlich wäre Ein Ex[e]mpel der reinen, freiheitlichen Verwaltung der Wirtsgeschäfte nach Muster Deutschland.
