<br />Die Glock‘ hat eben zwölf geschlagen,<br />Das neue Jahr es bricht nun an –<br />Das alte wir zu Grabe tragen,<br />Seid einig darum wie ein Mann,<br />Daß wir es freudig heut‘ begrüßen,<br />Die Sorgen lassen rasch entflieh‘n,<br />Das wir die Freuden ganz genießen,<br />Die uns im neuen Jahre blüh‘n!<br /><br />Obgleich wir uns nicht freuen können,<br />Weil Cleveland ist nicht erwählt,<br />Daß wir uns könn‘n nicht Sieger nennen,<br />Die Sorge uns sehr wenig quält!<br />Die Volkspartei hat doch gesiegt,<br />Mit riesiger Majorität –<br />Sie ist nicht in den Schlaf gewiegt,<br />Nein, muthig auf der Wacht sie steht.<br /><br />Mit scharfem Aug‘, mit klaren Blicken,<br />Steht immer treu sie auf der Wacht,<br />Daß nicht die Heuchelei und Tücke,<br />Der Geldsack und die Niedertracht,<br />Uns noch einmal in‘s Unglück bringen,<br />Mit ihrer feigen Hinterlist –<br />Nach Jahren wird es uns gelingen,<br />Zu zeigen, „was ‘ne Harke ist!“<br /><br />Ben Harrison kömmt bald an‘s Ruder,<br />Er ist „gewählt“ zum Präsident!<br />Man sagt, er sei ein schlimmer Bruder,<br />Welcher den Schwindel gründlich kennt.<br />Er will uns freien Whiskey geben<br />Und frei soll sein die Pfeif‘ Tabak! –<br />Doch was der Arme braucht zum Leben<br />Will er besteuern - welch ein Schnack!<br /><br />„Der Zweck er heiliget die Mittel!“<br />Dies ist des Pudels wahrer Kern!<br />Mit Hülfe hundsgemeiner Büttel!<br />Möcht‘ er uns knuten gar zu gern.<br />Der Fanatismus und das Schinden<br />Wird bald zur Mode – leider Gott‘s!<br />Die Schergen werden bald sich finden,<br />Die feilen „Pierce‘s“ und die „Pott‘s“!<br /><br />Doch laßt sie nur, die Freiheitshasser,<br />Die schwarzen Freunde finst‘rer Nacht,<br />Der Krug er geht so lang zum Wasser –<br />Bis er einmal in Scherben kracht –<br />Dann wird ein neuer Morgen tagen,<br />Wie ihn die Welt geseh‘n noch nie –<br />Und viele Gegner werden sagen:<br />„Wir schwören zur Demokratie!“<br /><br />D‘rum Freunde laßt den Mut nicht sinken,<br />Es kömmt sehr bald ‘ne bess‘re Zeit;<br />Den Wein laßt perlen, lasset blinken<br />In den Pokalen Alle heut‘ !<br />Laßt froh uns in die Zukunft blicken,<br />Denn sie ist unser! Nehmt mein Wort –<br />Kehrt kalt den Heuchlern Euren Rücken,<br />Strebt für die Freiheit immerfort!<br /><br />Die Ernte ist sehr gut gerathen!<br />Und Korn giebt es in Ueberfluß<br />In Iowa und in anderen Staaten,<br />Sagt, ist das nicht ein Hochgenuß?<br />Denn wenn der Farmer ist zufrieden<br />Mit seiner Ernt‘, so ist das nett!<br />Wir schließen ihm uns an als Glieder<br />Gemeinsam wie zu einer Kett‘!<br /><br />Euch Allen wünsch‘ ich frohe Stunden, Gesundheit und Zufriedenheit –<br />Heilung von vielen bösen Wunden,<br />Die schlaue Bosheit hält bereit.<br />Jedoch sogleich! In diesem Jahre <br />erde erfüllt der Wunsch so schön,<br />Daß baldigst auf der Todtenbahre,<br />Das „Schandgesetz“ wir liegen seh‘n.<br /><br />Mög‘ das Geschick doch gütig walten,<br />Wenn nicht – ich bin nicht Schuld daran –<br />Den jungen Mädchen, wie den alten<br />Wünsch‘ ich n‘ braven, hübschen Mann.<br />Zu jedem alten Junggesellen<br />Mög‘ finden sich ein gutes Weib –<br />Und möge auch in allen Fällen<br />Dem Wittwer werden diese Freud‘!<br /><br />So will ich diesen Wunsch nun schließen,<br />Zu Ende ist nun mein Gedicht -<br />Will alle Freunde herzlich grüßen,<br />Vergeßt den „Staats-Anzeiger“ nicht!<br />Er ist und bleibt ein muth’ger Streiter<br />Für Recht und Freiheit immerdar!<br />D’rum bleibt ihm treu, seid froh und heiter<br />Und springt vergnügt in‘s neue Jahr!<br /><br />[bottom left corner]<br />Der Staats-Anzeiger gegründet im Jahre 1869, steht im Kampfe für Freiheit und Recht, stets un[er]schrocken und unentmuthigt an der Spitze der Streiter, und hat dadurch eine solche Verbreitung in Iowa erlangt, daß er beinahe in jede einzelne Postoffice des Staates gelangt.
