The Iowa Staats-Anzeiger reports on the death of Fannie Eiboeck, who died just three days after her husband Joseph. The obituary gives details of the funerals of both individuals. Minnie McFarland and Ms. M. Howard, surviving family members, offer their thanks to those who contributed flowers and attended the funerals.

Of note is that Lafayette Young, Sr., journalist and U.S. senator (1910-11), served as an honorary pall bearer at Joseph Eiboeck's funeral. During World War I, Young served as chair of the State Council of Defense, which was charged with securing crop production and rooting out perceived seditious activity within Iowa. The Council forbade the teaching of German in public schools and was highly suspicious of the German-language press that Eiboeck had championed in Iowa. It is unclear how well Eiboeck and Young knew each other.

New Year's Greeting for readers of the Iowa Staats-Anzeiger
New Year; Calendar for 1889
Like many newspapers of the period, the Iowa Staats-Anzeiger published annual New Year's greetings for its readers. This greeting includes a poem on the new year of 1889, which reveals the Democratic leanings of the paper by lamenting that Grover Cleveland was not reelected and that Benjamin Harrison would soon be sworn in as president.

Joseph Eiboeck, who had passed away on 8 January 1913, had been president of the German-American Liberal League of Iowa. With the annual meeting of the league imminent, Paul Krüger, secretary of the organization, requests that other members of the League contact him in person or by letter regarding the proper course of action following Eiboeck's death.
The John Rath mentioned here is likely the father of John Washington (J.W.) Rath, co-founder of the Rath Packing Company of Waterloo.

A lying, malicious attack (Ein verlogener, niederträchtiger Angriff)
Eiboeck’s dispute with John P. Irish over saloon licensing at the Anti-Monopoly party convention
In reaction to a letter John P. Irish had published in the German newspaper Dubuque National-Demokrat, attacking Joseph Eiboeck's rhetoric in a speech at the Anti-Monopolist state convention in July 1874 in favor of including a license plank in the party platform, Eiboeck publishes an affidavit in his own newspaper, accusing Irish of lying and political blackmailing.
