Neues deutsches Blatt.

* * * * *

* * * * *

[transcribed by Rachel Harder]

Frau M. McFarland
-Tochter

Frau M. Howard,
Enkelkind

An unsere Leser.

Weißt Du[,] lieber Deutscher Mann[,] was Du verloren hast in Joseph Eiboeck?

[transcribed by Maggie Fischer]

Description
An account of the resource
The Iowa Staats-Anzeiger reports on the death of Fannie Eiboeck, who died just three days after her husband Joseph. The obituary gives details of the funerals of both individuals. Minnie McFarland and Ms. M. Howard, surviving family members, offer their thanks to those who contributed flowers and attended the funerals.

Of note is that Lafayette Young, Sr., journalist and U.S. senator (1910-11), served as an honorary pall bearer at Joseph Eiboeck's funeral. During World War I, Young served as chair of the State Council of Defense, which was charged with securing crop production and rooting out perceived seditious activity within Iowa. The Council forbade the teaching of German in public schools and was highly suspicious of the German-language press that Eiboeck had championed in Iowa. It is unclear how well Eiboeck and Young knew each other.

On 6 August 1914, the Iowa Staats-Anzeiger devoted its top headline to "Germany at War with Russia and France!" Translation
With heavy hearts we must fulfill our obligation to the readers of the Staats-Anzeiger and to the overall German community of the state and report the sad news that Joseph Eiboeck, that unflinching fighter for liberty and justice, was snatched away by the grim reaper on Wednesday, the 5th of January, at 11:15 a.m. Although he occasionally experienced moments of frailty at his advanced age, he nevertheless always recovered quickly, and was from dawn to dusk one of the most capable and active men we have known. On December 28 he complained of a light cold that kept him housebound, but initially showed no serious symptoms. A few days later he developed pneumonia and then, the day before his passing, suffered a stroke which fully paralyzed him and left him in a coma. It was deeply saddening to see a man like Joseph Eiboeck depart; we will never see a man so full of energy and courage in Iowa again, and his death will be mourned across the state and far beyond its borders, above all among the friends of the German-American Liberal State Association of Iowa, which he had served as president since its founding.
A short biography of the deceased follows. We will provide a more detailed one as soon as circumstances allow.
Mr. Eiboeck was born on February 23, 1838, in Breitenbrunn (Szeluskut), Hungary, and emigrated with his family at the beginning of 1849 to America, arriving on May 1st in Dubuque, Iowa, where he became a typesetter and the first apprentice at the first German newspaper in Iowa. For a couple of years he was a school teacher––he gave writing lessons when he was 18 years old and became a public school teacher at 19. In August 1859, in Garnavillo, Clayton County, he bought the English-language “Clayton County Journal,” which he relocated one year later to Elkader following the transfer of the county seat there. He published and edited the “Journal” until August 20, 1872. From ’61 to ’62 he was a member of the [illegible] of the Ninth Iowa Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. In 1868, he founded alongside his English paper [i.e., the “Clayton County Journal”] the “Nord Iowa Herold,” which he sold six months afterwards. In addition to the above named papers and the “Iowa Staats-Anzeiger,” which he edited and published for more than 39 years, he also published two English-language newspapers in Des Moines, first the “Herald of Liberty” and afterwards the “State Independent.” He edited both these papers as anti-Prohibition publications, against the interference of [temperance] fanatics in the basic rights of American citizens.
In 1873 he was in Europe, spending three months in Vienna as American Commissioner for the Vienna World’s Fair.
In 1872 Mr. Eiboeck wrote a “History of Clayton County and Northern Iowa” (Geschichte von Clayton County und dem nördlichen Iowa) and in 1900 he wrote the history of “The Germans of Iowa and their Achievements” (Die Deutschen von Iowa und deren Errungenschaften).
In 1879 he was nominated by the Democratic State Convention for the office of State Auditor, running against Buren R. Sherman, the later Governor. He was [initially] ahead of the other candidate on the ticket by so many votes that for a while it was uncertain which of the two was elected.
In 1893 Mr. Eiboeck was one of two national commissioners for the Columbian World’s Fair in Chicago. Thanks to his influence and industriousness, the Fair also stayed open on Sundays. His speech before the National Commission was cabled to both Paris and London.
On June 15th, 1862, Mr. Eiboeck married Miss Fannie Harrison. The couple had six children, including a son who died when he was five years-old. Only one child survives him, Mrs. Minnie McFarland, spouse of the late S.C. McFarland, American consul in Nottingham, England.
For more than half a century Mr. Eiboeck held yearly campaign speeches for the democratic party, to which he belonged since 1872. He was an honorary member of the Des Moines Turners and the German Jonathan Lodge No. 137 I.O.O.F. (Independent Order of Odd Fellows), was also a Freemason and a Knight Templar, as well as an honorary member of the German Men’s Choir.
The deceased belonged likewise to the German-American Press Association of the West, which he served for many years as president and then, in the last few years, as honorary president.
The funeral will take place on Friday, January 10th at 2:00 PM, beginning at the Freemason Lodge, which has been entrusted with planning the entire ceremony, and among whose members the deceased ranked as one of the oldest. The Turners Club, the German Odd Fellow Lodge and the German Men’s Choir will send honor escorts. The grieving spouse, daughter (Mrs. C. S. McFarland) and grandchild (Frau Howard), the last two of Marshalltown, mourn a truly beloved husband, loving father and grandfather.
In the passing of Joseph Eiboeck, the entire German community has lost one of its dearest friends.
The burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery.

† Joseph Eiboeck †
Redakteur und Herausgeber des
“Iowa Staats Anzeiger” gestorben

[transcribed by Maggie Fischer]

Translation

It is a common American custom that, when a change in the editorship of a newspaper takes place, the incoming editors will state their plans and principles. We feel obliged to follow this custom and do so all the more willingly, as it offers us at the outset the opportunity to present our point of view to the worthy subscribers of this paper, so that later on no one will consider themselves deceived or regret that their expectations had not been fulfilled.

The task of publishing a German newspaper here in the capital city of our great state is not an easy one, especially when that newspaper should represent the diverse interests of its readers and, moreover, do so with the energy, diligence and talent that the German community has a right to expect. Although we were for years the managing editor of a newspaper, we nonetheless enter this new venture with not a little apprehension,––not because we have long been accustomed to write for an American public in English and thus might be caught making mistakes in the German language (this will no doubt be generously overlooked), but to take on a position suitable for German sense and character––the responsibility of assuming the role of a representative and defender of our countrymen in Iowa, this might indeed shake one’s confidence in oneself, and in this regard we don’t deny that we assume this duty somewhat timidly.

In the belief that all old party questions have been resolved and nothing more than the question of reform and personal liberty remains, we have established the following goals:

To discuss all political questions freely and independently. Although we were an eager Republican at the founding of the Republican party, we were nonetheless one of the first to participate in the Liberal Republican movement and find today that we, like the many thousand Germans whopursued the same path, did the right thing, and in the future we will follow the party that pays homage to progress and reform. Currently, the political parties can be regarded as in chaos, in none is there much cohesion; questions under debate are more abstract than they are actual, every party claims to be for reform and yet so far everything has remained the same. Nevertheless, there must be two parties, and since the Republican party, which is currently in power, has either not been able or not wanted to secure any betterment for us, we must thus join the ranks of the Anti-Monopolists, with whom we will contend until they abandon their current principles.

It is our duty to defend German customs and rights. In doing so, we do not wish to make a Germany of America, but we will endeavor to bring both countries closer together and to discuss various social concerns with propriety. To make this easier, we have decided to deliver two to three columns in English every week, in which we will elucidate from time to time the views of the German press and the German community in good English. This will not deprive our German readers of any space, as we will continue to deliver the same amount of German reading material as previously.

We will endeavor to make the “Anzeiger” first in the field of news. As a state newspaper, it shall convey the main events of every city and every county, and we will attempt this as our resources allow and the support that the honorable public lends to us. Excerpts of the proceedings of legislature and of state assemblies as well as all noteworthy events that occur in our capital will naturally be reported.

Although we cannot deliver as much select reading material as other older newspapers in the big cities, we will nevertheless strive to give an overview of America and our old Fatherland. Likewise we will strive to bring precise market reports every week, indeed, anything that might be of use or entertaining for German farmers and business owners.

We bring experience, diligence and tenacity to our enterprise, and should the honorable public recognize our efforts through their active support, then we will always show ourselves diligent and thankful.

Respectfully,
The Editor

Achtungsvoll
Die Redaktion

[transcribed by Andrew Jansen]
