Einer dieser Republikaner meinte dann, daß [dass] verschiedene hochgestellte Demokraten in Carroll gesagt hätten, sie würden für Blaine stimmen. Auf unsere Frage, wer dann diese hochgestellten Demokraten seien, konnten sie natürlich keine Antwort geben, da dies nur eine Aussage war, um Leichtgläubige zu fangen. - John W. Guthrie, Sohn von P. M. Guthrie, kehrte von Notre Dame in Indiana zurück, um sich während der zweimonatlichen Freien [Ferien] von seinen anstrengenden Studien zu erholen. Er befleißigte sich insbesondere die deutsche Sprache gründlich zu erlernen. Ludwig from the popular company 'Gebrüder Ludwig', for which we apologize. - The company 'Kohn & Adler' in Rock Island, III., asked us to inform our readers that the people who send their names and addresses to us will get a complete copy of the Iowa Prohibition Law and other interesting notes. Kohn & Adler is a wholesaler in spirits. - We spoke some days ago with several Republicans about the prohibitionists and the Know-Nothing Blaine. One of these Republicans then held that several high-ranking Democrats in Carroll said that they would vote for Blaine. When we asked them who these high-ranking Democrats were, they were, of course, unable to answer because it was just a statement to catch the gullible. - John W. Guthrie, son of P. M. Guthrie, returned from Notre Dame in Indiana to recover from his strenuous studies during the two-month vacation. He was especially zealous to learn the German language thoroughly. As usual, he received several prizes this year for the best studies. - A fire destroyed the department store and the inventory of Swender brothers in Maple River Junction on Sunday night. The fire was discovered at about 1am. The owners were in Carroll at the time of the fire and had no idea that their property had fallen prey to the fire demon. - We want to give good advice to women and girls. If they have to reveal secrets to each other, especially if these are still a little delicate in nature, they should not stand under the staircase that is leading to the 'Democrat’s' office. Although the conversation which took place last week was not intended for our ears, the secret that has been negotiated is nevertheless well preserved. We won't tell anything. - So, next Tuesday is circus day. But since every circus always has a number of all kinds of swindlers, we alert our readers who will be coming to town on this day to see the 'elephant' to protect their purses from the pickpockets, since they are everywhere where you can find a big crowd of people pushing and pressing. Everyone should have the necessary "change" when he buys his ticket, so he does not show much money. - The Carroll Blaine and Logan Club has already gently departed. Die Leute kamen, sahen und gingen nach Midland, 20 Meilen von hier, wo nur ein „sage ein Haus“ steht (Section Haus). Dort soll eine Stadt gegründet werden. „Man bezahlt dort Lotten [Lots, Grundstücke] mit $350. Die Leute waren arm doch nicht so entmuthigt [entmutigt] – oder Alle miteinander Narren [.] Nun lieber Jos. M. wie stimmt das? Auf Gegenantwort bin ich gepannt.! Daß[ss] Marienfeld eine sichere Zukunft hat, steht felsenfest. Die Stadt wächst stetig und kostet ein Bauplatz bereits $50. Die Stadt wäre schon bedeutend größer, aber nur deutsche Katholiken können Aufnahme finden. Leute, welche mit der oben erwähnten Excursion [Exkursion] kamen, boten P. Prior $500 für einen Bauplatz, aber er gab ihn nicht. Wir wollen keine fremden Elemente hier, die Colonie [Kolonie] ist einig einer hilft den andern und dies harmonische Band wäre zerrissen, wenn anders Gläubige hierher kämen. Bereits hat Marienfeld Apotheke, Post, Telegraph, Kleider- Schuh- Eisen- und Grocerie-Store, ein Saloon und Restaurant sind im Bau begriffen und andere Geschäfte werden bald folgen. In kurzer Zeit wird eine Dampfmahlmühle hier errichtet. Kirche und Schule sind bereits zu klein und werden neue gebaut. Letztere soll von Schwestern geleitet werden. Im Herbst wird Marienfeld wohl County Sitz, ein Priester Seminar wird eröffnet und von einem Arzte aus dem Osten eine Heilanstalt für Lungenkranke gegründet. Alles dies wird noch vor Winter in Erfüllung gehen. Die Stadt macht mit ihren netten „Häusern“ einen angenehmen Eindruck. Alle Straßen sind schon ausgelegt und füllen sich ziemlich rasch mit Anwohnern. Zwei Jahre sind es her, daß[ss] an der Stelle, wo Marienfeld steht, noch die Erde erdrönte [erdröhnte] unter den Hufen wilder Pferde oder wilder Büffel, heute ist eine deutsche Kolonie dort voll glücklicher und hoffnungsreicher Deutschen. Von je her haben die Klöster in der Kultur und Wissenschaft Großes geleistet, auch wir, die wir in Marienfeld sind, haben unsere neue Heimath [Heimat] dem Segen Gottes bei unserm Unternehmen und dessen schöne Erfolge einem Kloster (den Karmelitern) zu verdanken. Schon das Emporblühen der Stadt ist ein klarer Beweis, daß[ss] die Farmer hier Sachen ziehen, denn wo die Farmer verhungern, wie unser Jos. Mihlenbauer sagt, da kann keine Stadt stehen, da sie ja grade von den Farmern hauptsächlich lebt. Ueber [Über] das Wachsthum [Wachstum] habe ich bereits weiter oben gesprochen, und will jetzt noch des Bodens und der wirklich bestehenden Uebelstände hier in Marienfeld gedenken! [Schluß[ss] folgt.] Da schreien die prohiblikanischen Organe immer über Schandthaten [Schandtaten] im Süden, nun aber höre man, was durch die Bevölkerung von Upton, Iowa, vorige Woche verübt wurde, und was der in Burlington, Ia. erscheinenden „Hawk Eye“ von dort mitgetheilt [mitgeteilt] wird: „Zu Upton, indem an Missouri grenzenden County Van Buren, hielt ein Deutscher seit längerer Zeit einen Saloon. Im Angesichte des 4ten Juli, mit seinem Prohibitionsgesetze, erachtete er es indeß[ss] für rathsamer [ratsamer] nach dem missourischen Upton in Scotland County überzusiedeln. Hier errichtete er eine neue Wirthschaft [Wirtschaft] und versicherte Jeden [jedem], der es hören wollte, daß[ss] er nicht von der Stelle weichen, sondern von derselben aus auch seine alte Kunden bedienen werde. Dies scheint die Prohibitionisten von Van Buren County wüthend [wütend] gemacht zu haben. Die rotteten sich zusammen, zogen in Begleitung zahlreicher Weiber über die Staatsgrenze und demolirten [demolierten] die ihnen verhaßte [verhasste] Wirthschaft [Wirtschaft]. Als die Utensilien herausgerissen waren und der Inhaber sich geflüchtet hatte, wurde das halbleere Gebäude angesteckt.“ Das ist ja recht schön! Muss da nicht jeder Bürger von Iowa erröthen [erröten] ob solcher Schandthat [Schandtat]? Aber nein, die Prohibitionisten haben längst alle Scham verloren! Wir sollte doch denken, daß[ss] jeder Wirth [Wirt] das Recht hat seinen Saluhn [Saloon] offen zu halten. Muß[ss] übrigens eine nette Gegend sein, das Van Buren County. Man kann übrigens sehen wie die Prohibitionisten es machen, wo immer sie die Mehrheit haben. Ferner ersieht man daraus, daß[ss] sie eine Horde Barbaren sind gleich den mordbrennerischen Apachen, Indianern, Avaren, auf Zivilisation also gar keinen Anspruch machen können. Die republikanischen Zeitungen zeigen, wenn von Whiskey die Rede ist, immer auf die demokratische Partei, und stellen sie als die Whiskey Partei hin. Sonderbar! Die Statistischen Berichte weisen nach, daß[ss] gerade in den strammsten republikanischen Staaten der meiste Whisky „gesoffen“ wird. Vice-Gouverneur Manning wird im 9. congressionellen Distrikt von Iowa als Candidat [Kandidat] für das National-Abgeordnetenhaus vorgeschlagen. Weßhalb [Weshalb] ist er denn nicht im 11. Distrikt geblieben? Oder war ihm etwa ein wenig bange geworden vor Carroll Co. u. seinem (Maning’s) „Record“? In Carroll Co. wo er ja seit Jahren wohnte und allgemein bekannt ist, kann er nicht einmal das Votum seiner eigenen Partei auf sich vereinigen. Translation Correspondence. [Continued] Before I go into more detail, I want to make a short comment for Jos. Mihlenbauer, which is to show how well one is informed here. Even though there is nothing about this in his reports, it is from him. He claims that there was an excursion here recently, but they left totally demoralized. That is not true. The people came, looked and went to Midland, 20 miles from here where just one single section house is standing. There, a city is to be founded. ‘You pay $350 for lots there. We do not want any strangers here, the colony is united, and each one helps the other und this harmonious bond would be disrupted if people of another faith were to live here. Marienfeld already has a pharmacy, a post office, a telegraph, a clothes, a shoe, a hardware and a grocery store, a saloon and a restaurant are under construction and other shops will soon follow. In a short time, a steam grinding mill will be constructed. The church and the school are too small already and are being rebuilt. The latter is to be directed by nuns. In the fall, Marienfeld will probably become county seat, a seminary for priests will be opened and a hospital for lung diseases will be opened as well by a doctor from the east. Everything will come true before this winter. The city makes a pleasant impression with its nice ‚houses‘. All streets are already laid out and fill up quite quickly with inhabitants. Two years ago when the earth where Marienfeld is standing now was still drumming with the hoofs of wild horses or wild buffaloes; a German colony is there today, full of happy and hopeful Germans. For a long time, monasteries have accomplished great things in culture and science, and we as well who live in Marienfeld owe our new home and God’s blessing for our enterprise and its successes to a monastery (the Carmelites). The flourishing of the town is a clear proof that the farmers grow things here, for where the farmers are starving, as our Jos. Mihlenbauer pretends, there can be no city because it lives mainly from the farmers living. I have already spoken about the development before, and now I want to commemorate the soil and the really existing problems here in Marienfeld. [Conclusion will follow.] The prohiblican organs are always screaming about crimes in the south, but now you hear what the community members of Upton, Iowa did last week and what the “Hawk Eye”, appearing in Burlington, Ia., is reporting: ‘In Upton, which is adjoining to the county Van Buren in Missouri, a German had been running a saloon for a long time. In view of July 4th, with its Prohibition Act, he thought it advisable to move to Upton in Scotland County, Missouri. He built a new saloon and promised everyone who wanted to hear it that he would not surrender and would serve his old customers from his new saloon. This seemed to make the prohibitionists of Van Buren County angry. They gathered together, accompanied by many hags they moved across the state border and demolished the hated saloon. As soon as all implements had been torn out and the owner had escaped, the half-empty building was set on fire.’ That is very nice! Must not every citizen of Iowa blush because of a crime like this? Hell no, every prohibitionists have long since lost their sense of shame. We should remind ourselves that every landlord has the right to keep his saloon open. It must be a nice area, this Van Buren County. You can see the way the prohibitionists are doing it, wherever they have the majority. Furthermore, you can see that they are a horde of barbarians like the murderous Apaches, Indians and Avars; so they cannot make any claim to civilization. The Republican newspapers always point to the Democratic Party whenever whiskey is the topic and set it up as the whiskey party. Strange! Statistical reports show that especially in the Republican states most whiskey is being consumed. Governor Manning is suggested as a candidate for the national House of Representatives in the 9th Congressional District of Iowa. Why did he not stay in the 11th district? Or was he a bit afraid of Carroll Co. and its (Manning’s) “Record”?. In Carroll Co., where he has been living for years and is well known, he cannot even collate the votes of his own party.
